About the Club

Founded in the early 2000's by Dr. Werner Meudt who regrettably passed away on January 1, 2021. His years of knowledge, kindness, and desire to teach will always linger in the club. We are incredibly grateful to his son, Alan, for donating Werner’s’ equipment to the club and for his assistance in keeping Werner’s legacy alive.

In August of 2018, Malcolm and Chris Irwin took over the coaching roles within the club.  Chris truly loved helping the beginners with all the basics of how to achieve success on the piste. Malcolm consistently utilizing his years of experience to help take our members to the next level. With the passing of Chris in 2023, Bernie Hassab became an assistant coach and supports in coaching of the beginners.

 

When the club moved from its original location at the Venice YMC to its current location at The Classical Academy of Sarasota, we faced the challenge of renaming the club, it had for many years been the Venice “Y” fencing club. However, the new location, being in Sarasota, could not retain the same name. Whilst it was important for us to pay homage to our founder, Werner, we decided to adopt the name “Suncoast Fencing Club” as this would better suit our geographic location.

We are incredibly grateful to “The Classical Academy of Sarasota” for generously hosting our club and for enabling us to bring the sport of Fencing to their community

SUNCOAST FENCING CLUB, INC. is a Florida registered Non-Profit business.

We will obtain 501(c)(3) status in 2024.
